Ubuntu has come a long way hasn't it? This review is mostly my opinion as I have tried it out and have nothing ill to say about it in general, these are just my nuances.
A few things Canonical should do:
Include Flash and Video Drivers
Canonical should then do as much as possible with the FOSS code they have available to work with the non-FOSS stuff as reliable as physically possible and make things like glitches not an issue. They need to focus on this step next. I am not asking for them to include obviously illegal things like ugly set or VLC. What I am asking for is legal closed source and open source mutuality. Apparently the non-FREE stuff isn't going to change their tune any time soon, so I think a FLOSS company should step up to the plate and make up for them. It would make them look better to everyone who cared enough to know, AND it would make Ubuntu seem as if it worked better than anything they ever tried to those who first try it out.
Some people need to wake up and develop some applications. Adobe isn't going to port Photoshop and Dreamweaver any time soon, Apple isn't going to port iLife and Final Cut, Sony isn't going to port Vegas, Game developers aren't going to port their hit games. It isn't going to ever happen. I think some people would do well to make some closed source Linux only applications that you had to pay for. It is a market completely virgin. Don't over charge for the applications either. Make them like 20 bucks a pop TOPS. Don't put in anti-copyrighting activation schemes, they simply don't work. If an application is good enough and priced right, people will buy them and you will make some money. You may not become rich, but you will get by.
Next thing we should do is push free codecs. Know a musician? Educate them about recording into free codecs, but charging for the songs. Set up a music store, cut the profits, funnel some into R&D and everyone wins!
