Learning Quest Framework

The Learning Quest Framework

This is a framework for organizing and motivating a self-study group around any particular subject/topic.

(1) Organize a group of people who are interested in learning about the subject/topic.

(2) Agree upon a text which everyone can obtain (the same edition).

(3) Define the scope of the quest with a definite start and a definite ending. This could be "the entire book" or it could be particular chapters, etc.

(4) Decide upon a certain number of problems to be completed each week (alternatively decide at each meeting the number to be completed by the next meeting, see (6))

(5) Each individual is responsible for learning the material necessary to solve the problem set. Each individual must find their own way and schedule for learning the material necessary for solving the problem set. Collaboration with other group members is an option but not required.

(6) Meet each week (or decided upon regular interval) to compare/discuss solutions. Each person must pastebin their solutions. These solutions will be evaluated by the rest of the group at the meeting.

(7) For each problem, every invalid solution gets 1 point, and no solution gets 2 points. In this way each member of the group accumulates points as the learning quest proceeds. In the end the person with the least points is the winner. (Alternatively members can be awarded 1 point for every plausible solution and 2 points for every correct solution. This scheme has a slightly different emphasis and the winner is the member with the most points in the end.) A list of participants and their scores will be kept and openly published.

(8) Optionally, the participants could chip in for a 'prize' for the winner.
